Castello di Aymavilles - Valle D'Aosta
Valle d’Aosta is the a land of castles, due to its position on the borders with France and French Switzerland. Castello di Aymavilles is one of the most beautiful and it is located on the top of a hill in Aymavilles, a hamlet in the middle part of Valle d’Aosta region. First evidences of the building date back to XIII century and over the years it has been updated several times.
Of course the position of Castello di Aymavilles is very strategic, because in the past it allowed perfectly to control the Valle d’Aosta traffic through the Piccolo San Bernardo pass and the entry part of Valle di Cogne. The castle was under the control of the powerful Savoia family, but during the year 1354 Savoia gave Castello di Aymaville to Challant, one of the most important families of Valle d’Aosta.
With this last family the castle had very important updates. It received the four towers with battlements, still present nowadays, and its style was slowly transformed from medieval to the current rococò one.
On 1970, Castello di Aymavilles was sold to the Italian State and this ceded the building to Valle d’Aosta region. The latter started a major operation of restoration, that has been now completed.
Some areas of the inside of Castello di Aymavilles, show the ancient structures of the building. In the rooms, there are now objects that were present in the castle and furniture belonged to the noble people who lived there in most recent years (last part of 1800 and first part of 1900).
