Castel del Monte - Abruzzo
In the area of Gran Sasso Massif – Abruzzo region – there is a gorgeous hamlet called Castel del Monte. Its origins date back to the B.C. age and it has a very complicated history, characterized by numerous conquests by northern European populations especially in the Medieval period.
The area of Gran Sasso massif – the highest peak of this mountain called Corno Grande has an altitude of 2912 meters – is fantastic. It is really harsh, but with incredible beauty. The hamlet is located on the top of an hill like all the hamlets present in this area.
It is important to underline that the Abruzzo region is a seismic land and this part of the L’Aquila district, was hit by a strong earthquake on 6th April 2009. Hamlets such as Castel del Monte were almost completely destroyed.
People here are very strong minded and they started to rebuild their villages, making them exactly as they were before the earthquake and also using all the original material that was not destroyed. You can imagine what kind of effort this population put into the reconstruction of these sites.
We spent our stay in Castel del Monte at Destasù. This is a wonderful and modern B&B, whit a good breakfast served as a buffet. Furthermore from here you can reach the most important hamlets of the Gran Sasso area.
