On this part of the border between Lombardia and Veneto regions, there are several tasty local dishes, but the following are considered “a must” by BBofItaly.
First of all Tortelli and Tortellini (little Tortelli) di Valeggio a kind of pasta also known as Nodi d’Amore (knot of love) due to its particular shape.
This Tortelli can be stuffed with several kinds of food, such as: meat, mushrooms, cheese, vegetables.
Another very famous local first course, is Bigoli con Sarde di Lago e Pomodori Secchi. Bigoli is a kind of Spaghetti but with a bigger thickness and with a hole in the their centre. Sarde di Lago are a special lake fish, and Pomodori Secchi are dried tomatoes. Bigoli con Sarde has a strong taste due to the presence of Sarde.
The recommended second dish is Baccalà Parmantier or Cotechino. Baccalà and Bigoli are mainly widespread in the southern part of Veneto region, whose border with Lombardia practically goes through Valeggio sul Mincio.
Baccalà Parmantier is dried and salted cod cooked with a specific recipe and presented along with potatoes cream, cherry tomatoes and onion. Cotechino is a kind of pork cured meat that must be cooked. It is not a mere sausage.
And of course never forget dessert and a good bottle of wine.
