Bergamo - Lombardia
Bergamo is an amazing little city in Lombardia region. Located on the border with the Prealpi, it can be considered the “gateway” to this fantastic mountain area.
The town is divided in two parts: the lower one on the flat land called Bergamo Bassa and the higher on the top of a hill called Bergamo Alta. The latter is the oldest part of Bergamo and can be considered the downtown.
The little city has Roman origins and of course also has a long Medieval history. But Bergamo had its period of greatest splendour under the domain of Repubblica di Venezia.
Bergamo Alta is truly a jewel encompassed by strong and high walls.
Piazza Vecchia is the major square of Bergamo Alta e from here Piazza del Duomo can be reached where there are Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and Cattedrale di Sant’Alessandro also known as Duomo di Bergamo.
The origins of Cattedrale di Sant’Alessandro date back to the Roman period, but the current building was built in the XV century, and the end of the work with the main front of the church dates back to the XIX century.
Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore was built in the XII century and its internal parts are astonishing and compelling with its Baroque style decorations and also magnificent and ancient tapestries.
