Bassano del Grappa - Veneto
Bassano del Grappa is a little city in the Vicenza district – Veneto region. It is famous for many reasons but well known for two main aspects. The first is the bridge that crosses the Brenta river. It dates back to 1209 year, and is called Ponte degli Alpini (Bridge of the Alpini historic Italian mountain army). The second is Grappa, a very famous and strong alcoholic drink, used above all by mountain people and distilled in the city since 1779 year by Bortolo Nardini.
The first world war is one of the most important historical periods of Bassano del Grappa. It was the scene of raging battles for the defence of Italy from the Austrian invasion, and Alpini were at the forefront of these battles.
Nowadays Bassano del Grappa is a fantastic little city, and we warmly suggest you stroll along its alleys and small squares. You will really enjoy this experience ! The view from Ponte degli Alpini is gorgeous, but Castello degli Ezzelini (Ezzelini castle) is also worth visiting.
This building dates back to X century, and it has been updated for different purposes over the years. At its entrance you can observe the mighty Torre di Ser Ivano (Ser Ivano tower). With its 30 meters of altitude it was a powerful “defence machine”, self-sufficient and absolutely impregnable.
We suggest to visit also Palazzo Roberti (Roberti palace). It dates back to the end of XVII century, and was the residence of Napoleone Bonaparte for many months. Nowadays it houses a fantastic library.
Don’t miss Torre Civica (Civica tower). It dates back more or less to year 1312, and it was built for defensive purposes. Furthermore its height – 43 meters – made it a very important observation point over the surrounding area.
There are so many wonderful places to visit in Bassano del Grappa, but we suggest spending part of your time in Piazza Libertà (Libertà square) and Piazza Garibaldi (Garibaldi square).
These two places are located in downtown of the city where you can admire the main historical monuments and have some rest in little restaurants and bars, enjoying a fantastic environment !
