Barga - Toscana
Garfagnana is a magic land of Toscana region. Magic because it has an important medieval heritage, is merged in a spectacular environment and least but not last it has a tasty gastronomy.
One of the most important village in Garfagnana land – Lucca district – is Barga, situated inside Valle del Serchio, a valley crossed by Serchio river and closed between Alpi Apuane and Appennino centrale.
First medieval evidences of Barga come from IX century when it was a feud of Rolandinghi powerful family. Over the years Barga became a large commercial centre with the neighbour villages like for example Modena.
Most important Barga’s monument to visit is Cattedrale di San Cristoforo, located on the top of the hill where the village was founded, surrounded by large forests and an incredible environment. Construction of cathedral begun on XI century and lasted until XVI century.
Of course gastronomy is spectacular in Barga where several sagre (big parties mainly done to collect funds for local projects) are organized during the seasons, for example the sagra of pesce e patate to commemorate people who left Barga looking for job abroad especially in Scotland, or sagra del maiale.
