Arquà Petrarca - Veneto
In a wonderful area of Veneto region (north-east Italy), there is Arquà Petrarca a village still preserved nowadays as it was during XIV century. It is also so famous because in a woderful house – a little palace – it hosted the famous poet Francesco Petrarca.
The two major and most interesting buildings worth visiting are Petrarca’s palace, where the poet spent the last part of his life and the church of Santa Maria Assunta.
The main altar of the church dates back to 1700s period while the two wooden lateral date back to 1500s period. During some refurbishment works in the early 1900s some frescoes came to light. Furthermore the funeral of Petrarca took place in this church.
As for the Petrarca’s palace we can say that the poet spent last period of his lives here since year 1369 and he personally took care of the refurbishment of the building. It is characterized by the presence of the poet’s rooms on the lower floors while the upper ones were used by servants.
After the Petrarca’s death the structure of the building was updated, also adding some fantastic frescoes on the walls of the rooms. The palace became the destination of several pilgrims who wanted to visit the place where the famous poet spent the last years of his life.
At any rate it is a pleasure strolling through the alleys of the hamlet, because you can plunge in a fantastic Italian era full of history and art, but also because you can enjoy a wonderful and relaxing environment.
