Arezzo - Tuscany

Arezzo is a nothing short of remarkable city in Regione Toscana (Tuscany region). It is a real hidden jewel, because is dominated by notoriety of Siena and Firenze (Florence) and for this reason its beauties are not so well known.

Strolling through Arezzo’s alleys is a relaxing experience and you can still feeling the presence of the spirit of great characters who made the city magnificent. Among them we must remember Giorgio Vasari for his design of Logge di Arezzo (Arezzo’s Lodges), Piero Della Francesca for his amazing frescoes inside Cappella Bacci of Basilica di San Francesco (Bacci Chapel encompassed in Basilica of San Francesco) and Cimabue for his crucifix inside Basilica di San Domenico.

Arezzo is divided in four main ancient neighbourhoods which bear the names of the four more important gates for entering the old city: Porta Crucifera also named Colcitrone, Porta del Foro also named Porta San Lorentino, Porta Sant’Andrea and Porta Santo Spirito.

The city of Tuscany region is located on the Apennines range between Val di Chiana and Valdarno, and it has a complicated story ruled by big powers over the years. Its first evidences date back before the Etruscan period and therefore Arezzo was already present in IX century BC.

But of course the main period for the city was the Rinascimento (Renaissance) during the end of Medieval period ant the first period of Modern Age. Over these centuries Arezzo was included in the Tuscany state and therefore ruled by Firenze (Florence), which also gave a big thrust to its art and architecture, leaving us an awesome city.
