Alberobello - Puglia
Alberobello is a tiny village close to Valle d’Itria and Colline della Murgia, located in Puglia region, southern Italy.
The hamlet has become UNESCO site for its very characteristic buildings named Trulli, a typical limestone house white coloured and with black roof.
As we can read on the UNESCO website: « the trulli, limestone dwellings that can be found in the southern region of Puglia, are examples of drywall (mortarless) construction, a prehistoric building technique still in use in this region. They made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighbouring fields. Normally they feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs».
This tiny and unique hamlet is something unbelievable and can be considered a real open-air museum. Walking around its alleys, you will find yourself immersed in another world, a fantasy and breathtaking world !
Along alleys you will find shops with souvenirs and local crafts. The inside of some Trulli can be visited and here you can find some small museums that reproduce ancient workplaces. Don’t forget to buy Olio d’Oliva (olive oil), that is superb with a fantastic taste.
Some advice we can give is that during summer (July – August) it’s not pleasant to stay in Alberobello because of the heat. Hence we suggest to visit the hamlet during May, October or even Christmas time, when alleys are full of Christmas lights and the atmosphere is surprisingly romantic.
