Aeolian Islands - Isole Eolie
The archipelago of the Aeolian Islands is made up of 7 islands located in the north-east of Sicily. The islands owe their name to the God Aeolus, the God of the winds.
Because of their extraordinary charm, these islands are also called as the “Seven pearls of the Mediterranean”.
The Aeolian islands are of volcanic origin and are currently active volcanoes and, in some of them, you can see the fumes of the margmatic activity coming out of fumaroles or craters.
The islands are: Stromboli, Panarea, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Lipari and Vulcano
Stromboli Island
The island of Stromboli is the northernmost one of the Aeolian islands archipelago. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world which periodically manifests its presence with explosions and the launch of lapilli. The island has no roads and has only 3 small villages. A little more than a kilometer and a half from Stromboli rises “Lo Strombolicchio“, a small islet completely uninhabited on the top of which there is a lighthouse. “Lo Strombolicchio” is a nature reserve where there are also some endangered flowers. It is also possible to reach the summit of the Stromboli volcano (called “Iddu” in the local dialect) with a walk of about 2 hours.
Lipari Island
The island of Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian islands archipelago. Unlike the island of Stromboli, Lipari has roads and it is possible to visit it entirely by car, scooter or even bicycle. Being of volcanic origin, the island of Lipari has jagged and high coasts with numerous caves. In the city of Lipari there is also a castle, whose walls date back to 500. The castle reaches 50 meters in height and was built on a promontary overlooking the sea.
In the road route that runs through the entire island, there are panoramic points from which it is possible to admire the other islands of the archipelago. Among these, the Belvedere Quattrocchi certainly has a breathtaking view of the island of Vulcano.
Vulcano Island
The island of Vulcano is the closest to Sicily and is made up of 4 active volcanoes: Lentia, Piano, Vulcanello and Fossa. It is one of the smallest islands of the Aeolian archipelago and represents an excellent combination of human settlement and respect for nature. Throughout the island there are fumaroles that emit sulfur which gives the unmistakable smell to the whole island. As soon as you dock at the port you can see a natural lake of hot volcanic mud, real natural open-air spa. The beneficial effects on the skin of these muds are exceptional making the visit to this island even more suggestive. Even on the island of Vulcano it is possible to reach the summit of the volcanic crater, with a walk of about 3 hours and a difference in height of about 400 meters.
Salina Island
The island of Salina is located in the center of the archipelago of the Aeolian islands. It is the second largest island, after Lipari, in terms of size. As for the others, Salina is also of volcanic origin, but here the six volcanoes that compose it are extinct and the phenomena are very limited. The island is very famous for the production of capers and Malvasia (a sweet wine that is drunk at the end of a meal).
Island of Panarea
The island of Panarea is renowned for its clear waters and the beaches that surround the island. It is an island where, unlike the others, there is also a great tourist and entertainment activity, thanks to its beauty, unspoiled nature and the presence of clubs and bars.
Alicudi and Filicudi islands
They are the westernmost islands of the Aeolian archipelago. They are among the least inhabited islands and with a more uncontaminated nature. They are both unlit islands which make the visit even more suggestive in the hours after sunset. The island of Filicudi is the oldest of the entire archipelago
